The 2008 Beijing Olympics
The city of Beijing won the right to host the 20008 Summer Olympics in 2001. In fact the organization that deals with this matter announced the results on July 13, 2001 after much talks and deliberations of those people and organizations involved. The decision was reached by the International Olympic Committee during the 112th IOC Session that was conducted in Moscow, Russia. The cities that submitted their intentions to host the 2008 include three Asian cities. These cities are Beijing, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Other cities that submitted the bid to IOC include the city of Seville, Cairo and Havana but these cities failed to even make the short list. The cities that truly competed with Beijing were Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Osaka.
The first round of deliberation that was conducted by the IOC saw Beijing taking a lead over the other four cities. The last placer, Osaka was taken off the list after the city received six votes. By the second round, Beijing managed to solicit the majority votes that were needed in order to secure the spot. The result then was received by the Chinese community with great enthusiasm. In fact the Premier of China declared that the feat of Beijing and of China for Beijing Olympics was an example of the international recognition of the country’s stability, economic progress and the healthy life.
